Why?
Did you know that the humble plastic carrier bag is responsible for the deaths
of many birds and animals? On average, we use a plastic bag for just 12
minutes - and they don't degrade for 500 years! In fact, every single piece of
plastic that has EVER been made is still with us (somewhere) today.
Modbury in Devon became the UK's first 'plastic bag free' village in May 2007.
The scheme wasn't possible without the support of all the shops and residents
- and it has been highlighted as a huge success. Modbury has proved that there
really are viable alternatives to plastic bags, like 'bags for life', jute shopping bags,
string bags, paper bags, and even biodegradeable cornstarch carriers.
But I need my plastic bags...
Carriers are useful for lining the bin and clearing up after your dog - but did you know that cornstarch bags look exactly the same and can carry the same load too? Plus, you can simply place them into your compositing bin where they biodegrade - 100%!
Alrewas can become 'plastic bag free' if we reduce the demand for bags from our shops, re-use our plastic carriers, and return them to the store for recycling. Let's return to tradiional shopping values in our beautiful village whilst we 'do our bit' for the environment too!
