The Alrewas Show

Shetlands

Shetland Ponies, as the name suggests, originate in the Shetland Isles, where it is known that small horses have been kept since the Bronze Age. Full of character, they are strong and intelligent, and despite their small size were first used to pull carts and ploughs, and to carry heavy loads such as peat and coal.

During the Industrial Revolution, thousands of Shetlands were taken south to England to work as pit ponies - some were even exported to the USA for this purpose.

Nowadays they are more likely to be seen at shows or giving rides to small children, or performing ceremonial duties, for example as the mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

You'll see plenty of Shetlands on display at the Alrewas Show; we are registered with the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society and the Alrewas Show is a diary highlight for many Shetland owners.
