Alrewas Show

Hounds

The hounds you'll see at the Alrewas Show are working dogs, bred for hunting down the centuries. There are various hunting breeds, and you'll see a good selection of these at the Alrewas Show.

Nowadays they no longer hunt live quarry, and of course fox hunting has been illegal in the UK since 2004. Some hunts follow trails laid earlier in the day (trail hunting) while some hunt the "clean boot" - human quarry, usually a proficient fell runner or marathon runner. Some hunts are mounted while others go on foot, walking behind the hounds.

All hunts take great care to comply with the current legislation, and work closely with the farming community to ensure that they only hunt on land that farmers have given them permission to use.

Although they are hunting animals, they are very friendly, and love meeting the general public - at the Alrewas Show you'll have the chance to come into the ring to say Hello!
