Alrewas Show

Chickens are one of the more recent classes of animal to be domesticated for farming purposes. They have been providing meat, eggs and feathers to humans for around 4,000 years.

In the past they were also used for sport - cock fighting was in fact made illegal in the UK in 1849. These days chicken is one of the world-wide staple sources of protein, and is the meat most consumed in the UK - we get through over 2 million chickens a day.

But there is more to poultry than just chickens. There are dozens of recognised breeds, all scrupulously regulated by the Poultry Club of Great Britain.

At the Alrewas show you'll see a great selection of some of the most spectacular breeds of poultry - but be warned, it can get noisy inside the tent when the crowing starts!

You don't have to be a professional to exhibit at the Alrewas Show - if you keep poultry at home, bring them along to be judged in our poultry pets competition.
