We are excited to announce the Sheep Section at the Alrewas Show.
Sheep farming is a significant part of agriculture in England, with around 13.3 million sheep on farms in the country. There are more than 60 pure breeds of sheep in the UK, which is more than any other country in the world. Breeds all have their own characteristics and suitability for our variety of landscapes, often originating from a specific part of the country.
However, sheep farming faces challenges such as declining farmer numbers and changes in land use.
Sheep are raised for their meat (lamb or mutton which is from an older animal) Sheep milk is used in many cheeses. Sheep’s wool is harvested by shearing and is used in wool products.
The Blackface or Scottish Blackface is the most common sheep breed in the United Kingdom. Despite the name, it did not originate in Scotland, but south of the border. There are many other breeds of sheep in England, and the Alrewas Show is open to all farmers who wish to exhibit their sheep.
